Convenience Store Manager

To be a Convenience Store Manager you need to have led retail teams elsewhere, so you can show a team of between 15 and 35 Customer Service Assistants what great service is all about. Salesperson, motivator, logistics whiz and entrepreneur all rolled into one – this is for inspirational characters that can manage budgets, keep the store stocked and drive sales that exceed targets.

A day in the life of Don
My Mornings

I start by setting up the store, sorting out the M&S chilled delivery, completing the banking report and financial audit reconciliations, going through the mobile and lottery receipts and seeing what products we're upselling – coffee for example.

My afternoons

Later on, I check the dates on products, do some stock takes, record the amount of waste we produce, do some hygiene and store checks, make sure the toilets are nice and clean, oversee our cashiers, do some general tidying and look after any visitors (like my Territory Manager, or an interviewee).

Connections 4

Will give you the experience and skills you need to leave the store environment and move into the strategic role of Territory Manager. It's a year-long programme and includes a stint at our Support Centre, where you'll learn how the teams there give our stores the help and resources not just to operate, but continually improve.

Aside from learning how things work nationally, your time there will help you build a broader picture of how the retail business fits into the BP family, and give you the chance to network with numerous specialists from different areas of the business. These people, along with a new Territory-level mentor, will help you through the second phase of the programme.

That second phase involves taking responsibility for a group of stores which increases in number as you gain confidence and develop your multi-site management skills. Throughout the programme, you'll also receive formal training from –

  • Our Retail College
  • Our Global Essentials Management Training Programme
"The connections programme is a great way to help develop your people, and gives people the tools to realise their potential." Tony, Wavendon

Deputy & Convenience Store Manager applications

If your online application is successful, our Resourcing team will contact you to discuss your application further. Then, you may be invited to a half-day Assessment Centre where, as well as meeting Convenience Store Managers, you'll complete some activities that show us whether you've the skills for the job. The last stage is a competency-based interview, where we'll ask for real-life examples of how you've handled certain situations, and an In-Store Experience – so you can see how our stores are run. Depending on the role, we may ask you for a SWOT analysis and to demonstrate some practical retail skills. We'll then make our final decision.

Convenience Store Manager profiles

"I came from one of the big supermarkets. I helped open 23 new branches there. But I wanted more responsibility at work. I put my CV on a job site and BP Retail got in touch with me. The opportunity sounded interesting. And once I'd done the interviews I could easily see that with the fuel, the hot food and the way the business operates, there's an extra dimension to retail at BP.

"I started as a Deputy Manager at an M&S store. And I now have my own BP Connect store. It's not a walk in the park, but my Territory Manager gives me lots of advice. I like to think I'd work in a similar way if – hopefully when – I get to his level.

"Before then, I'm still enjoying working closely with customers and developing my team. I try to get everyone out every two months to bond a little – Reading's only up the road. I think that closeness shows in our performance and our results."
