Duty Manager

There's more to this than simply leading a team of Customer Service Assistants. You'll handle deliveries, manage stocks and oversee in-store processes – anything and everything to create a friendly, efficient shopping experience. You might have supervised in retail before. You might want your first taste of management. For certain, though, this is the perfect grounding for a management career.

This course looks at the practical responsibilities of a Deputy Manager, and the softer skills that'll help you to thrive in the role. The eight-week programme includes a special project. And the on-the-job training modules cover –

"My route to BP Retail is probably a bit different to most. I did an MBA in India and then worked as Cabin Crew for an Indian airline before I came to the UK to study. When I got here, a friend recommended BP Retail to me.

"I enjoyed the interviews – everyone was nice and friendly. And I knew my airline experience would help. In my old job, I made sure my passengers were happy. Now I do the same for BP customers. Recently, one of our older regular customers' cars broke down on our forecourt. I called a taxi for her and helped her get home. I really like that side of the job.

"The Connections programme has been brilliant. A lot of people do their training at my store – so I see people learning how things are supposed to be done all the time. Then, the Connections programme fills in all the technical background. So you can learn why we do things, too."

A day in the life of Sindu, Duty Manager
5am

Get up.

5.35am

Leave in my car for work.

5.45am

Arrive at work.

5.45am - 10am

Complete compliance tasks, like checking the temperature of the chiller cabinets, counting all the till's floats, looking to see if there are any price changes and updating the price tickets on our shelves.

10am - 11am

Eat breakfast. Or lunch. I'm never quite sure what to call it when I'm on the morning shift.

11am - 2pm

Check the cashiers' shift rotas and count their floats. The banking and cashing usually takes about 45 minutes.

2pm - 4pm

Help cash up and complete various bits of paperwork.

4pm

Head home for dinner and relax in front of the TV or with some friends.
